Winlink Wednesday: A Stepping Stone to Winlink Expertise

This article was initially featured in the World Famous – Thermal Belt Amateur Radio Club Newsletter – November 2024

Winlink Wednesday is an initiative designed to sharpen communication skills among amateur radio operators using the Winlink system. This weekly net invites participants to send and receive emails via RF, providing a practical framework for building expertise in emergency communication. With digital modes growing in popularity for various situations, Winlink Wednesday allows operators to explore the capabilities of Winlink Express, including digital modes like PACTOR, VARA, and Packet.

The primary goal of Winlink Wednesday is to foster preparedness and skill in handling traffic across different modes. Each week, operators check in with simple messages and standard forms, occasionally including weather information and transmission modes. This exercise not only helps participants hone their individual skills but also cultivates a supportive community of amateur radio enthusiasts, where they can share experiences and learn from each other.

To participate, operators should have Winlink Express installed and configured correctly and can refer to the Winlink Wednesday weekly schedule for specific tasks.

Active participation in these exercises enhances knowledge and strengthens readiness for emergencies. By engaging regularly, operators not only boost their personal proficiency but also contribute to the resilience of the amateur radio community, underscoring the critical role of effective communication during crises.
