Upcoming Regional Hamfests: Great Events Within 100 Miles of Home

If you’re a ham radio enthusiast, you understand the excitement of connecting with fellow operators. But what if you can’t make it to one of the big national conventions? Don’t worry—there are plenty of regional hamfests happening within 100 miles of home. These events provide a great opportunity to meet local hams, explore new and used radio equipment, attend educational sessions, and engage in networking opportunities. Whether you’re a seasoned operator or just starting, regional hamfests offer a more personal touch, fostering learning and camaraderie among attendees.

Several exciting events are coming up, making it the perfect time to plan your next hamfest experience. The Charlotte Hamfest 2025, hosted by the Mecklenburg Amateur Radio Society, takes place in Concord, NC, on March 7–8. A week later, on March 15, the Sevier County Hamfest in Sevierville, TN, welcomes amateur radio enthusiasts for another great event organized by the Sevier County Amateur Radio Society. Then the Columbia Amateur Radio Club Swapfest follows on April 26 at North Trenholm Baptist Church in Columbia, SC, running from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Later in the summer, the WCARS Hamfest on July 26 will be held at the Smoky Mountain Event Center in Waynesville, NC, with gates opening at 8:00 AM. Each of these events offers a unique experience and a chance to engage with the ham radio community.

To make the most of your hamfest visit, preparation is key. Before attending, research the vendors and equipment that will be available so you can make informed decisions. Many hamfests offer educational sessions where you can learn about new technologies and operating techniques. Creating a checklist of items you’re interested in can help you get the most out of your attendance.

When it comes to making purchases, it’s essential to be cautious. The thrill of all that radio gear can be exciting, but it’s important to ensure that any equipment you buy is functional and worth the price. Always test equipment before purchasing, and if a seller refuses, consider it a red flag. Research fair market prices in advance so you can negotiate with confidence. If a deal seems too good to be true, trust your instincts—it probably is.

Beyond the equipment, one of the best aspects of attending a hamfest is the chance to connect with fellow operators. Think of it as a reunion for radio enthusiasts. Bringing a fellow ham along can enhance the experience, making it easier to evaluate equipment and exchange ideas. Don’t hesitate to engage in conversations with other attendees; you never know what valuable tips or connections you might gain. Many hamfests are organized by local radio clubs, and joining one can provide ongoing support, resources, and opportunities for future collaboration.

For a smooth and enjoyable experience, consider a few additional tips. Carpooling with other hams not only makes the trip more fun but also allows for knowledge sharing along the way. Staying hydrated and bringing snacks is essential, as you’ll be walking around for hours. Keeping a notepad handy to jot down useful information or contacts can help you retain valuable insights from the event.

By attending educational sessions, being mindful of purchases, and networking with fellow hams, you can transform a simple visit into a meaningful learning opportunity. The amateur radio community thrives on shared knowledge and collaboration, so gear up, do your homework, and get ready to enjoy the adventure that awaits at your next hamfest. I’ll see you at the hamfest!
